Jacques Louis David created the flag in 1794 but the three colors of liberty flew over Valmy two years before.
In 1870, our great-grand-parents saw in it the possibility of solace.
And their sons defended it in 1914 when what was « born in Valmy died in Verdun ».
Our fathers went through thick and thin with it in 1940 across too many countries to count.
They carried it as a flame in their hearts when it was dark in the land.
We own it. It is ours to keep. We won’t be ashamed of our mistakes, nor won’t we take pride in them.
We will stand by our flag and say : unlike you, we are not afraid of our freedom.
