Some people are young
And nothing else
Said Bukowski
He surely meant that
It was necessary to
Be something else
In order to matter.

Most people would be
Something more rather than
Wait for youth to pass.
The reason they don’t
Is waithood.

Reaching waithood is
When debt is for
Paying an education
And one defers wealth until
The private cost
Of this public benefit is paid for
In middle age or never.

Reaching waithood
Is when buying a house
Recedes in a liquid future
Where everybody else’s savings
Chase returns up the tower
Of unaffordable prices.

The age of waithood is an age of
Expectations forced
To remain dreams
Because they can never
Quite become
