The scream and its thief

« I was walking along the road with two friends-the sun was setting— the sky turned blood red-I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence-there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city-my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety-and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature. »
Edvard Munch

« When I’m out of prison, I walk along the river and watch people feeding the birds. I feel I can see who is there because they have a bad conscience. Who has beaten their woman the day before and makes up for it by feeding the birds? I’m like that myself. I often take bread to my prison cell, so I can feed the birds outside the window. Then I ask myself, « Are you doing this to be nice to the birds, or because you have a bad conscience, Pal »
Pal Engers, the thief who stole The Scream, a painting by Edvard Munch.
