It used to be nowhere

It used to be a place
It used to be an empty lot
It used to be a bakery
It used to be a village cobbler
It used to be a dry good store
It used to be a Jewish taylor
Then it changed and it used to be
Sally’s cheerful place
And it used to be a diner
And then some burger joint
Later it used to be a Denny’s
Later it used to be an Arby’s (Eat at Arby’s)
Later it used to be a Subway, from belly to belly up
At some point it changed again and
It used to be an ATT store
For years it used to be
A bookstore after which
It used to be a drugstore opened after midnight
And it could have been an Apple Store
But it was too small and
Not in the best location, location, location,
So it became a store where one sells
Fruits in a foreign langage
And soon it used to be what
It had been all along when
It used to be a place holder
For when the streets would mean
Something again.
